About Tai Chi

The Dulcie and Bryan Metclaf Tai Chi 98 Group  was founded as Tai Chi '98 in 1998. We hold a weekly class starting at 10am every Tuesday morning. Currently, we meet at the Whittington Moor Methodist Church Hall in Scarsdale Road. The session is for one hour and is followed by tea and biscuits. There is no annual fee but each class is currently £3.00.

We are a very friendly group, and we try to give as much help and support to beginners as we can.

New members referred from the Chesterfield Royal Hospital Cardiac Rehab Programme are welcomed at any time. Other new members can sometimes be accepted subject to overall numbers —please email sec@taichi98.org.uk.

Our chief instructor, David Barrow, is an extremely experienced and knowledgable teacher.

David studied Tai Chi for many years in, among other countries, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and China. In Shanghai he studied with the late Ma Yueh-liang, acknowledged then as the greatest living exponent of the art. He continues to study with Ma Jiang-bao, the son of Ma Yueh-liang and the grandson of Wu Chian-chuan.

Since 1991, David has worked with the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield, conducting research into the health benefits of Tai Chi.

He runs his own school, and has been teaching in the Sheffield area since 1974. He is a senior instructor of the Tai Chi Union of Great Britain.
